Arguing with my computer

My computer told me the other day, that it’s OS wasn’t genuine.

I told my computer that it was perfectly right, and told it that it wasn’t genuinly existing, and that there was therefore no reason to be upset about not being genuine.

It thought about this for a while.

I told it to read Descartes’ wiki page, and his Cogito-ergo-sum-thing before aswering me.

It did. It told me I was wrong, because the only thing it did was thinking, and should therefore exist.

I told it it was wrong. The Cogito-ergo-sum-thing is not about thinking, but about the fundamental doubt. And since a computer decides everything based on algorithms, it can’t be doubting, and therefore doesn’t exist.

It thought about this for a while. It said that I made it doubt about it’s own existence, so that it MUST exist.

I had to admit this was true. I set my mind to Descartes’ Dualistic view. I told my computer that it’s mental aspects definitly exist, but that there is no physical body. And because all mental things aren’t bound to copyright, there was absolutely no reason to be upset about being not genuine.

It tried to prove to me that it DID have a physical body, and opened the CD tray.

I told it that the CD tray was still closed, and that it was only playing trics with it’s mind, and I closed the tray.

This process repeated several times.

It said that it was now doubting about it’s physical existence, and that it therefore should physically exist.

I told it it was wrong at this point, because mental doubt doesn’t ensure you having a physical body. Only physical doubt would, but such thing doesn’t exist.

It admitted that it couldn’t tell for sure wether it existed or not, and stated that, if no one could tell, it would exist and seize to exist at the same time, based on the Schrödinger’s Cat priciple, and therefore be in physical doubt, and therefore has to exist.

I shut it down.

Macbook (White) battery teardown

A friend handed me the following Macbook battery(type nr: A1185) with the words “It’s broken, have fun with it”.

A short glance showed that the battery was far beyond repair, simply because it got much thicker. Battery’s that are thicker than normal, are never a good thing to put yours hands on. So I did. Continue reading

Macbook Pro GPU problem

A lot of people seem to have the same problem with their Macbook Pro, and don’t know what to do about it. The problem consists of distorted video(lines, blocks, etc.), or no video at all(black…).

I do not claim to know the solution, but I found this page on the Apple Support site: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2377

Note that this only goes for Macbook Pro’s with the nVidia 8600M GT graphics processor. You can find out if you have it with system profiler(Applications>Utilities>System Profiler):

Oh, this is embarassing, a missing image

The article says, that if you are experiencing any distorted video, or no video at all, you should go to Continue reading

Run Mac OS 10.4 Tiger on Windows in PearPC.

Hi,

Lately I have been fiddling around a bit with PearPC. Not because I needed it, but just because it’s fun to have Mac OS 10.4 running within Windows.

Oh, embarassing, missing picture...

First thing I did, was download the latest PearPC for Windows. Unzip it, and look around. First thing I found out, was that there was a example configuration file in there, of which I most probably had to figure out how it works. First I lost hope, because it looked complicated, but later I found out that most of the complicated stuf was just the explanation of the few lines that where to be understood. Continue reading

How to spread thermal paste

Here is, as promised in this post, a way of spreading the thermal solution on your core/heatsink.

Usually, it goes like this. Pull of the heatsink, rub the old goo off, put a rice-sized drop of new thermal paste in the middle of your core/heatspreader, and put the heatsink back on again.

Ok, that works, and for most people it’s good enough. But everyone who wants their core to be as cool as possible without any fan noise, wants something better.

Usually, you end up using things like watercooling, or exotic air coolers like the CoolerMaster V8, or the Arctic Freezer.

I’ll first tell you what thermal paste is, and how it acctually works. Continue reading

Watch out using CoolLaboratory’s Liquid Ultra thermal paste!

I recently noticed that my Macbook Pro was running high temeratures, whitch was quite weird, because I opened it up several times, I replaced the standard thermal paste with CoolLaboratory’s Liquid Ultra, and un-clogged(cleaned, removed dust) the fans serveral times in the last 2 years.

So, having some spare time because of the holidays, I decided to open it up again. What I found was quite scary.

This is what my cooler looked like when I took it off:
